Why I created this course
Hi, I’m Valen. I always wanted to be a teacher.
Ever since I was a little girl, I pictured myself in a classroom, using my creativity to share my passion for teaching. But life took me down a different path.
In 2016, my business partner and I opened a gym in Rincón, Puerto Rico. The story of how I ended up here is too long for this paragraph. We had zero experience, zero business education, no location, no equipment and very little savings. We started training on the beach, and then in a parking lot, under a tent. It wasn’t the classroom I had always dreamed of, but without realizing it, I found myself in front of a group of students, teaching classes every day.
Little by little, we grew. Every day, one or two new athletes walked in. Today, 10 years later, we have a 3,500-square-foot space, more than 200 five-star reviews and, since 2023, the Best Gym in Puerto Rico award four years in a row.
Those 10 years taught us so much. We learned everything by trial and error, and that cost us a lot of time and money. But obstacle after obstacle, we got the gym where we wanted it to be.
With the gym running, my plan was to focus on my family: become a mom, take two or three months of maternity leave and go back to work with my daughter. But sometimes things don’t go as planned.
I received a completely unexpected cancer diagnosis. One surgery followed another, along with a physical, mental and emotional burnout that’s hard to put into words.
But one of the most important lessons I learned in those 10 years of work was that we can do hard things, and with that phrase in my mind, I pulled through. My plans changed, but here I am. I’m a mom. I still own my business, and I still watch it grow day after day, just from a different angle.
Through all of it, that childhood dream never went away. Five years ago, I became the marketing teacher at Proyecto Alelí. Every year I see how much the students achieve when they apply what they learn. I watch their dream of becoming entrepreneurs come true, and being part of their story means so much to me.
This course is my way of continuing to fulfill my dream: being a teacher, now teaching what I learned from my own business, and for the first time, opening my classes to the public.
